Creating New Dreams; Moving Forward in the Changing Economy

By Margie Earhart

Everyone is touched by today’s challenging economy. For some the effect has been direct - the loss of a job, or financial setbacks in the market. But the reach of today’s economy impacts everyone’s lives. We’re all affected when housing prices drop. We’re all affected by the uncertainty that the economy takes on our schools and our neighborhoods.

In response to this troubled economy, Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Minneapolis and the Sabes JCC will present their 2nd annual economic conference on Sunday, March 14, called “Creating New Dreams: Moving Forward in the Changing Economy.”

During the free conference, attendees will hear a keynote speech, “An Optimistic View of the U.S. Economy Moving Forward,” by Arthur Rolnick, Senior Vice President and Director of Research with the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis.

Participants will also choose from a variety of seminars. Here’s a sampling:

Communication Bootcamp -This fun, interactive workshop will boost your ability to connect with friends, partners/spouses and co-workers. Specific topics will include body language and a discussion of the big four communication pitfalls.

Landing a job today requires that you boldly present your image and credentials through your communications. At Hoist A Banner, you will learn a variety of packaging ideas to promote yourself in the job market.

Adjusting to life’s challenges is a lifelong skill. In the seminar When Dreams Don’t Come True you will learn strategies for coping when life doesn’t turn out the way you envisioned.

Charting a Course for a new career will help you understand when the best-thought-out market strategies run aground. You will learn how to implement a winning strategy and a tactical action plan.

A person’s living environment has a huge impact on your emotional well-being, so attendees can choose the Feng Shui breakout session. This ancient art form teaches you how to enhance well-being. There are many easy “fixes” for your home, office or even your desk to help you in many areas of your life.

Another seminar, Luck is No Accident, based on the book by John D. Krumboltz and Al S. Levin, will help you learn to recognize the opportunities that unplanned events present and to make the most of happenstance. Events, such as a chance meeting, a broken appointment, a fill-in job or a newly discovered hobby, can positively impact lives.
